Very quick and easy check in. We took an uber to get to this location and chose is as the rates are much lower than renting from the airport. Staff spoke English which was a big bonus. No pressure to get more insurance and photos of the car were immediately sent to us via email. We dropped the car off at Lisbon airport and had no issues. Damage deposit was removed and we were only charged for the toll reader (we were expecting this charge).
Consider not renting here. Hertz in Portugal is dishonest and scams customers, and is not responsive to customer requests for support. Despite us advising the rental agent that we have full insurance coverage through our credit card and verbally declining insurance on our car rental in July 2024, the agent still added insurance to our car rental. They tricked us - they showed us on the rental agreement that we declined the "personal insurance", but still added 98 Euro for collision, 56 Euro for Theft Protection and tax on these insurance, nearly doubling the cost of our car rental. When we discovered this issue, we asked Hertz to adjust the rental agreement. The agent informed us they could not refund at the store, instead they directed us to email apoiocliente to arrange a refund. We emailed and have still not received a response for over two months. I have since read many negative reviews about Hertz in Portugal scamming customers - I wish I had known this before my trip and would have rented from another company.
Normal
Partner and I pre-booked a rental car with Hertz. We had been using rental cars across our time in Europe and not had issues. Upon arrival, we are told our cards won't work for the deposit (even though they had previously in other countries) and he wouldn't even try the card in the machine without charging us extra because it was a debit card. My cousins partner was with us and had a European credit card which would be accepted but we had to add him as a driver (extra charge) so he could use his card for the deposit. We somehow ended up with more additional charges that weren't mentioned in our original booking because he told us we hadn't booked directly through Hertz (even though we most certainly had). I do feel that we were scammed, 700 euro seems excessive for a 7 day rental. This is double the amount that a similar car cost us for 7 days in France. Would not recommend at all.
I don't like how they treat customers
They are closed mid day. Plan to get your car early or after 2:30pm. The woman that assisted with the rental was pleasant and helpful.
No waiting; all staff were very efficient and polite. Their posted vs. actual hours are inconsistent and screwy. You also can't get through directly by the telephone. They take a long lunch break; some outlets including Google say that they close at 1:30, but they actually re-open after their lunch break and they're supposed to stay open till seven, but they only stay open till 630, but you don't find that out till you get there at 6:45 and there's a note on the window saying that they're closed at 6:30 now. it's really kind of a mess which caused me to bring the car there and they were closed. Moreover, I picked the car up right before they closed for lunch and halfway down the block the warning signal came on with low tire pressure- on a BMW that I just picked up! So somebody didn't check the warning lights before they gave me the car, and I couldn't go back to have it checked because they were closed. The warning signal problem, despite putting air in the tire, stayed on the remainder of the trip and I had to deal with it over the course of a week. Lots of phone calls and stops.
My wife and I recently rented a car through Hertz Canada in Portugal. It is the first time I have been completely dissapointed by Hertz International reservations. The person I was on the phone with was completely untrained, was not even able to give correct numbers (I was looking for a pre-paid rate). Next thing she told me the rate was inclusive of all charges however two days prior to the departure I learnt they have added destination and local road charge. I was never able to get through the customer service manager to discuss it, so I requested to file a complain. Guess what - I have never received an email I was promised. We picked up the car in Porto and drove to Lagos he same day (the customer service person was very nice actually). Approximately half way I noticed the tires have not been inflated properly (one was way below the recommended pressure) also the next day we ran out of windshield liquid although we barely used it. I have made another complain after getting back home - never got a proper response. I have used Hertz over 20 years, most likely this time was the last one.
