Poorly trained sales people and Management. They charged the deposit and Pre Authorization and did not release the Deposit when the car was returned. Could not get a hold of anyone in the office, bad phone #, terrible all around. Go to Naitonal Car rental.
It is true that if you book online there may be high insurance prices added. If you decline, they will charge a security deposit. But I declined (with credit card rental insurance) and returned the car with no issues, and in the end was able to rent a fine car for a very good, probably unbeatable price. I don't think this is as shady and scammy as many reviews make it seem, you just need to understand the deal.
Extremely expensive. At the end of your rental they charge you 3-4 times initial price. Not worth it. Also bad customer service. Not polite or friendly staff.
Bait and switch. I booked and reserved our car online when we booked our flight and we were quoted one price. Upon arrival, the price of the rental was 5 times the quote. I was with my family and had no choice but to eat the cost. To add insult to injury, the agent showed me the vehicle that I was "going to receive", which was a pristine blue SUV. When I got the final paperwork, I was informed that I was going to receive another vehicle, same make and model, but white. So, what should be different, right? Well, the car given to me was not as clean... ok... had a couple of dings... documented no big deal. What you can't know from inspection is how the car drives. It had 74000 kms on it, the brakes were not the best and it was horribly under powered. Step on the gas and it goes no where. This is not good when driving in a busy city with crazy traffic. In general, I felt Cheated in every way. The company that serviced us, also services Dollar and a couple of others under the same corporate umbrella. I will never recommend nor use this company again. The fact that I had to pay 5 times what my quote was, is enough to say that this is short of fraud. Then the car switch? Why did the agent show me a car and tell me this is what you will be driving only to switch it at the last minute? Very shady. DO NOT RECOMMEND
We hired a car in Tuxtla Gutierrez Airport it took us about 4 hrs to get the wrong car. "Because they did not have what we wanted" they gave us an old dodge wagon with no breaks and very very bad treated vehicle. Next day we returned . It took us half a day. Left with a better car about 7pm when we arrived at 2pm. Additional driver charge $750 Mx pesos ! When others charged $140. The service at the HERTZ AVASA desk was particularly bad the woman had absolute no idea of customer service. Never use this company if you have a flat tyre they will charge you for it. They are abusive.
Worts service. They don't inform you well about the prices. And at the end you end up paying 5000 pesos extra for an useless insurance. I don't recommend it at all.
0 star if possible We made a reservation for a car online paid the booking fee and upon arrival they told us that it is sold out and we had to get another car which costs more than 6x the original payment. They told me either to pay or leave. Why bother making a reservation if you won't honor it. The man at the shop was getting aggressive as I told him to honor the original reservation. I have hertz gold elite 5 star tier membership and they still treated me so horribly. AVOID and go to Europcar next door. Way better service and prices. Never using hertz in Mexico ever
Beware you will be required to purchase their insurance at the counter before you can pick up a car. Prices for coverage are posted using a laminated flyer available for your review ONLY at the counter, so you can't even shop around ahead of time. Cheapest is $70USD/day for lowest coverage. THEY DO NOT ACCEPT insurance from your credit card (Amex, CSR, etc. which is what I usually use and have never had a problem getting accepted). Furthermore they want you to pay w a debit card otherwise you incur additional charges when paying them w a credit card. Booked and confirmed reservation for our rental fully online. I am told at the counter the insurance coverage offered online would not have been accepted anyway. Basically, YOU STILL HAVE TO PAY OUT OF YOUR AS* AT THE COUNTER. We ended up abandoning the reservation in favor of a smaller local company recommended by a contact. Surprise, surprise: the same exact reservation came out cheaper than the total cost of Hertz insurance alone. BTW, calling Hertz is useless. Their best advice was to ask at the counter for them to place a note on the reservation to refund the insurance costs later. Not a snowball's chance in hell that's happening. Also witnessed three other parties go through the same dispute at the counter. Two caved. One of these did not receive the vehicle they'd reserved; they got manual instead of automatic. They get one star for observing COVID-19 safety precautions. This same company offers Hertz, Avasa, Dollar, Thrifty, and Firefly car rentals.
