Even if there were zero stars, they would not be deserved. In short: we kindly returned a modern vehicle with a water problem, received a much worse vehicle as compensation, spent 4 hours of our holiday with a lot of hassle, no customer orientation, lack of communication and rip-off attitude. The story: We arrived today with a new 700km Hyundai i10 that we had rented in Cancun with a problem. There was a lot of water in the footwell of the vehicle. On sharp left-hand bends, water dripped underneath the glove compartment and collected. It made sense to change the vehicle. The first question was whether we had driven the vehicle through the water, so much for customer-orientation. After a long discussion, we were offered an old Chevrolet Aveo with over 60,000 kilometres, a fully manual key and no mention of CarPlay or infotainment (but officially the same category). However, the employee promised to reserve a comparably modern vehicle later that day. We agreed that we would come back 6 hours later, we referred to please inform the following employees. In the afternoon, a new employee arrived who had never heard of the problem. A new exchange was not possible due to a lack of vehicles, and an upgrade to an available vehicle with corresponding modern equipment was only possible for an additional charge of USD 16/day. The option to resolve the issue with the issuing office in Cancun was not possible. It is not possible to look at our handover protocol. No further help was possible. He didn't know the employee from the morning. All in all, this was the worst experience I've ever had with a car hire company - never ever again.
As previously stated by other reviewers, they have a tendency to give you faulty cars particularly tires. Had to refuse the first car they offered as tires were very soft. Make sure you go with the full cover they provide to decrease the preauth. on your credit card (they only blocked about $ 300 by doing so). No issues upon returning the car.
Extremely disappointed with my experience at Europa car rental. The service was painfully slow, and the staff seemed inexperienced and uninformed. Despite being promised a guaranteed price, I was overcharged with a flimsy excuse. While the extra $50 may seem insignificant to some, the principle of the matter left a bitter taste. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to argue further. Overall, it was an unsatisfactory experience that I wouldn't recommend.
Merida airport Europcar scam. Be on alert for a free 'ugrade' . They will provide an old car because (I was told from Cancun representative) they don't like sending newer cars from Merida to Cancun. Our car has a tire that exploded on a perfectly maintained highway. They still made me PAY for it!
The attendants are required to do way too much work. All of the information that we entered previously online was not communicated to the pick up location so we had to fill out all the paperwork again and they have to do so many steps it's very cumbersome. The staff working there were extremely nice and helpful. We had purchased car insurance through Allianz ahead of time. Before we were allowed to take the car we had to either buy their insurance or post a 20,000 US dollar Bond
Pretty standard rental car experience outside the US. The ridiculously cheap reservation through chase travel was of course not honored but the real price was competitive and reasonable. Be prepared to have a hefty reserve on your credit card in order to reduce the price of the required extra insurance. The car I chose was basic, manual transmission, clean and comfortable. We put a lot of miles on it in a week. No problems. No extra cleaning or damage fees when returned. Thanks for allowing me to return the car a half hour before official opening time. Would have missed my 6AM flight if you waited till 5AM. The shuttle service was quick. The only reason I might choose a different company next visit is the lack of 24 hr returns. You really should be at the airport 2 hours before boarding flights out of Mexico because the passport stamping line was long and slow.
Browsed Kayak for a low cost rental out of Merida from a range of competing companies. I paid in advance online with Kayak for the 4 day rental but was told when picking up the car it was only a reservation fee not a rental fee. If I wanted my online payment back I'd have to take it up with Kayak. Grossly unethical charging reservation fees that look and function as car rental rates when there's plenty of prices and providers in a competitive marketplace. Europcar then told me if I wanted to access my rental car I had to pay $150 to waive purchasing Europcar damage insurance in order to access my "reservation ". Manipulating the process to suck in customers is a bad business model. Europcar don't pretend you're a cheap option on Kayak if you're not.
To say it in in short: One of the worst experiences I have had so far when renting a EuropCar car. The head office should urgently review the service and behaviour at this branch - in my view, they are damaging EuropCar's good reputation. The good first: There is a shuttle bus from the airport to the car rental and there is an air-conditioned waiting room . And you do a checkIn and they keep the order of that checkIn time. But this waiting room is also urgently needed, because the excessive procedure in which the last tank of petrol is sold ("... much cheaper than at the petrol stations outside ..."- who believes it) and in particular additional insurances are sold with almost threatening scenarios ("... what if a stone chip happens, the car has engine damage and has to be towed, you have an accident, the car is stolen..."). We had already taken out additional comprehensive insurance in advance through our service provider, which didn't stop the rental company from trying to take out additional insurance for us for 15 minutes. In addition, you get the instructions and a note with various instructions that the car is not to be returned too dirty, sandy, or with wet seats or liquids, otherwise extra fees will be due (see photos). Apart from the fact that this is rather unusual, since a final cleaning should normally be included in the rental price, the wording is also so vague that you hardly know what is still considered normal dirt and what "excessively dirty" means. Furthermore, one is advised to take photos or a video of the car at the handover in order to be able to document later that a scratch or damage was already present beforehand - this is also unusual as one normally receives a paper in which the previous damage is marked and acknowledged. So discussions at the end of the rental period are almost pre-programmed. Our car return than took 20 minutes, so better calculate some extra time when you return your car. In the end, we got a rental car that looked ok but definitely had some damage on the right front side - but we only noticed it when driving over 70 km/H ( strange sound of tire) In addition, the car (and it was a middle class model - not a small car) had an extremely low equipment - it may be that it was because we chose a car without navigation - but not even an obstacle warning when reversing is rather unusual in the middle class and would certainly also be in the interest of the rental company to avoid damage - a fool who thinks evil of it and they are just trying to sell the more expensive insurance better. Parallel to our rental procedure, we experienced how a nice lady was really scared with various threatening scenarios of what could happen in order to take out such an insurance - this is an unacceptable service behaviour. We also had to point out several times that we already have such a full insurance and do not need any more (original quote from the landlord: "... but what if the insurance does not pay..."). Due to this whole procedure, the check-in takes a good 30 minutes and the waiting room is also crowded due to the many people waiting. In summary: + shuttle bus from the airport with friendly driver + Air-conditioned waiting room o Vehicle selection - Duration of the process until the vehicle is handed over - Pressing the customer to take out an additional insurance policy - Urging to buy the last tank of fuel "cheaper" here at EuropCar - No form at handover listing the previous damages - Unclear regulation about the dirtiness of the vehicle and what a final cleaning might cost. - Vehicle was not 100% in order (may have been only with us so) in any case, a more extensive inspection of the vehicles is missing before he udder renting. In the end, by far the worst experience I have ever had with EuropCar and definitely something that can permanently damage their reputation as a good and high quality car rental company.
