I booked the rental thru Expedia. I did not pay in advance and did not buy the insurance offered thru Expedia. I knew that if I wanted the full coverage and liability I would likely pay as much as for the rental car itself (because, yes, Mexican car insurance is a greedy venture). If I didn't get the full coverage insurance, I knew I would worry and fret day and night every single second I was in possession of it. So I got the car for the exact price Expedia booked it for, and paid that much again for insurance. Avis personnel were great. They made it easy. Everything was smooth and exactly as quoted beforehand.
hmm where so i start, first off i am a Avis Preffered Plus member( not sure why i am not president's club yet) but we will get to that later. HeadsUp this is a long detailed reviewed. ''I have been in Merida since Feb 2023 and i have been renting cars monthly at this location spending an average of $1000 monthly, not Pesos, Dollars. i go to the same location, this airport location. I actually know most if not all of the employees by face or name, that's how many times I've been there. This is October 2023 so if you do the math,, I have spent over 10,000 Dollars here, and I have NEVER been given an upgrade, now that might sound like its not a big deal, but when you've spent that much money at the same location, you would expect a better treatment from the company. I've been given cars with bad breaks and so on. in October after the car they rented out to me died from low battery, i asked to speak to the manager , a woman with a supervisor on her name tag spoke to me , I expressed my concerns, hey I'm here every month spending over $1000, how come i never get an upgrade, i also advised her of my Avis preferred status, she said it has never happened because maybe they don't have an upgrade available, but think about it, 9 months in a row and i pickup a car every month or every 3 weeks and there has NEVER been an upgrade available? no sorry i dont believe that . she then offered me an upgrade from a manual transmission to an automatic, that means nothing especially since I wanted a manual transmission anyway. point is. this is not the way you treat a consistent customer spending that much money with you, I have been to other countries and states and I always get an upgrade due to my Avis preferred plus status, but not this location. i refuse to believe its it is because i don't look like them or because i don't speak their language, but i am never renting from here again after this time, ill spend my money elsewhere or another renting company .
Absolute rip-off scam. I prepaid. Put in all my information. They then suggested I hadn't prepaid at all. After 40 minutes of waiting they finally agreed I paid but demanded ac extra $900 for insurance or a $4,070 deposit. $4,070. The card covers full insurance and they have all the credit details, so they could have charged if something had gone wrong, but $4,070 deposit? No refund yet. Will have to fight with the credit card company to get my money back.
Beware when renting from Avis Mexico. They force you to either purchase full coverage insurance or leave 70,000 pesos deposit from your credit card. I had already prepaid for my rental and I had previously rented from Avis several times. I needed the car so I had to take on the full coverage insurance. I ended up paying more on insurance than the rental. Look for other options before coming here and make sure to call ahead to check on how much they will take from your credit card. When I returned the car, there was a gentleman that was also being forced to either take insurance or take on full coverage. I can tell you he was as shocked as I was. Another issue was also that their credit card machine was not working properly and they authorized my credit card twice. I had to wait for 5 days for the money to be put back on my credit card.
If it was less than 1 star I would use it. They charged USD 300 additional fee because we had reserved from airport which was not disclosed when we made the online reservation on their website! The lack of transparency is incredibly deceptive and unprofessional. They knew we had no choice and therefore had to pay the fee. Corporate extortion at its best.
What people should be wary of is the deposit. I returned the car 3 days ago in perfect condition and I am still waiting for the 20,000 mxn deposit to be returned to my bank account. This is what is unfair and this is why they have such terrible reviews. Not the car or services but taking a lot of money and then delaying it's return. Be very careful. It has made me very nervous and I should be on holiday!!!!
Misleading rip-off scheme. Booked the most expensive insurance online. Real insurance ended up costing 3x the cost of the rental. Edit: the car didn't work. The battery was broken, and only lasted the first day. The second day, we had to call the service, because we couldn't start the car. They could only come one day later, and then we had to drive back to the airport to change the car. So basically the last two days were ruined because we were given a broken car. We did not get any refund from them for this. They actually tried to make us pay extra for the fuel of the replacement car. What a joke.
I reserved online, then as I arrived they simply refused to rent me the car because I paid with a debit card, but they require a credit card for huge security deposits. The website mentions that you can pay with both but it simply is not true. At least I got a full refund (2 weeks later). On that same day, other customers discovered they had to pay additional insurance fees way more expensive than what they had already paid online. Simply dishonest. This is the worst experience with a rental company ever. Really disappointed with Avis Mexico. Avoid this agency.
