Good car, good service, but please pick the phone. We had to drive almost 100 km to extend the rental period ...
There are entire Facebook pages with thousands of cases where people were deceived and lost hundreds to thousands of euros because of Europcar. You might be reading bad reviews and thinking: "Well, that's not going me, I always take full insurance and record photos and videos of the car". Unfortunately, that will not help. They will use every possible deceitful practice to squeeze money out of you and after the rental just charge you for the damages you did not do and any little thing they can come up with. You will spend hours arguing with their non-existent support trying to dispute the charges and they will refuse doing that despite the evidence.
We paid for full coverage, but they still have found a way to scam us. As reiterated in numerous other reviews, we strongly advise you to NEVER choose Europcar. Their business model is scamming customers with fraudulent charges, not renting cars. When we received the car, we noticed it was in pretty bad shape, so we started recording it, but the employee insisted that it was unnecessary because we had full coverage. We received the car with destroyed trunk storage and a broken parcel shelf that wasn't even in its place; it was just lying in the trunk. We recorded some stuff but didn't do a very thorough job because, as the employee said, we have full coverage. Furthermore, we were misled by an employee who falsely claimed the tank was full, and the gas meter was broken and did not go above 7/8. As we found out, it was a lie when we refueled the car. They marked the pickup time before the employee even went to bring the car to us, but then we spent about half an hour waiting for the car and arguing about gas with the employee. When returning the car, we were 31 minutes late (including a 10-minute wait in line for return), and they have only a 29-minute delay tolerance, so they've changed us an extra day because of 2 minutes. So they stick to the formalities only when it's convenient for them. After the rental, we received the invoice with an extra 150EUR charge for the parcel shelf, which was not damaged by us. Despite our protests and evidence, they now refuse to cancel this unjust charge, further demonstrating their lack of customer service.
I would not recommend this rental group. While the people were very nice, I am still dealing with the aftermath of them lying to me. I rented a car from them in the summer of 2022 and I specifically asked multiple times in both english and portuguese about the via verde tolls and the payment for them. They said they will take care of it and that I don't have to do anything for it and how Its incorporated into my bill. I confirmed this with them again as I was handing the keys back to them. I have since received 3 bills through the mail, the first 1 I never received and the other 2 bills with late penalties and a due date that had already passed by the time I received the bill. I paid the 2nd bill nearly a year ago and I only now got another bill due to late penalties even though I paid through their site and they told me what I was due. I have now submitted an appeal and am waiting to see what will happen. I would not recommend dealing with this rental group again. I have had to pay hundreds in additional fees because of them
Marta @ Europcar Lisboa Gare do Oriente was great i was unaware my booking wasn't confirmed so she was nice enough to arrange a scooter from another branch in 20 minutes. I was having bad day as my luggage was lost & still in Rome italy day after I landed in Portugal Only thing that was a let down I was quoted 116 euro via email & was charged 180 euro
DO NOT RENT FROM THIS BUSINESS. We rented a car for a few days and returned it within the grace period (30 minutes) at 12:15. The people at this centre did not tell me they would be closed between 12-2:30 for lunch... at the largest train station in Lisbon? We then had to go to another centre, explained it to them and they seemed sympathetic, but ultimately didn't understand. Then later in the day we were charged for a whole additional day. Utterly incompetent and unfair, makes no sense to treat people like this.
As far as the staff is concerned, I would give it a 5-star. The 3-star rating lies to the fact that despite being at such a popular and very central spot in Lisbon, the office closes at 19:00 and is closed during weekends!!
Rented here 3 times already. Cars are always clean, with full tank. Pick up / return time is good: around 10-20 minutes. There were no issues with extra charges from deposit and the deposit amount is much lower than in other renting companies.
