The worst possible rip-off. I received the car as a replacement from the insurance company but needed a few more days, as my car wasn't ready in the time they gave me. They told me the extra 6 days cost would be 123.84 euros and didn't mention the IVA, so it ended up being 152.32 euros. My son got it in the beginning, so it was his card that got associated with the total 330 euros of the guarantee. They showed him huge scratches in the passenger doors when they gave him the car and mentioned nothing else, but after returning it, they charged 263.97 euros for supposed new scratches in 3 of the wheel rims. Those scratches, if they exist, are the normsl use scratches all rims have, just by being driven, and I don't believe they weren't there beforehand, or they are repaired every time the cars are used. I contacted the client support asking for pictures of the wheel reems before the rental, and they confirmed there are no pictures, didn't send any of the supposed scratches, and said they are going to charge them anyway, even if they cannot prove their existence before the rental (or even after, for that matter). When I went to their office in Lagos for the 6-day extension, I asked the person there how much it would cost me to return the car with no fuel, and the guy there said, in a quite dismissive way, that it would be 73 (purposely not mentioning euros), maybe a bit less, depending on how the tank was, but in the end they charged 168.28 euros. In total, they ripped my son's card off for 387.73 euros, counting the differences for the days, the fuel, and the supposed new scratches.
After my poor experience at Avis Porto Airport, I've suffered even worse service from Avis back in the UK. I have emailed Avis on five separate occasions to complain about my rental experience and to claim financial compensation. Each time the email is acknowledged but nobody ever takes it further. Nobody ever gets in touch with me even though I have multiple complaint reference numbers. I also tried calling numerous times, once holding on for 20 minutes before the call dropped out! Someone called David reached out to me after my original Google review but he never responded to my message. Don't rent from Avis if you ever want to contact them afterwards. Even if you belong to their Presidents Club, as I unfortunately do.
I do not recommend renting from Avis as a company, particularly from Lisbon or Lagos. Firstly, at the pick-up location in Lisbon, the guy at the front desk reiterated that it was cheaper if we did not fill up the gas as long as it didn't get below 1/4 tank. We should've known better but also they should be honest. I was charged $75.00 when I returned it when I could have filled it up for less than $20. The bigger issue is when I returned the vehicle, they accused me of damage and charged for damages that are simply normal wear-and-tear on a vehicle (see photo). There are some tiny stone marks at the underside of the bumper that they claimed was damage to the vehicle and I was charged $256. I have disputed the charge with Amex, but it still was a negative ending to our trip and an annoyance to have to dispute.
STAY AWAY!!!! You will thank me for it! It's a SCAM. I've rented dozens of cars before in North America without issue. First time doing it in Europe (Lagos, Portugal) and it's a fraudulent joke IMO. The front desk talks a good game "Sir we have pictures of all the existing damages on file so you don't need to inspect it". Well if you do decide to rent there, inspect the hell out of every micro paint chip, scratch, nick, scrape, scuff or dent (and take copious pictures, I'm not kidding) because they will absolutely scour over it (that same front desk smooth talker - I wonder if he gets a cut) and claim, (after the fact and once you don't have the car anymore) that there is damage (however minuscule, inadvertent or manufactured) and charge your credit card after the fact. So maybe, if a rock pops up from the car in front of you and hits your fender, that small knick will put you back a cool 200-300 Euros charged to your card. Is it worth the risk? As others have mentioned, dealing with the head office to get proof of the damage seems like a nightmare. Especially if you are a tourist and have left the region or the country when this additional amount is charged to your credit card (to which they have unfettered access). I will try to contest with them but my repayment will be to help you avoid this place. Who knows, each of their cars could be paid 5 times over with these small time "tactics" not to use other words. In my opinion, try other car rental companies than Budget/Avis in Lagos, for your sake.
SCAMMED!! DON'T BOOK HERE!! I returned my car after 2 days of no incident, and they charged me EUR350 for damages. Took over 2 months of reaching out to see proof and finally they sent pictures of the tiniest scratches through blurry photos. Will be disputing the charges.
Very professional car rental agency. They explain everything very clearly, and provide both English and Portuguese instructions/contracts. Very competitive prices in the summertime. Have used this agency twice already and will use it again if needed.
I have never experienced such a ridiculous policy at a car rental company: I've rented the car from Thursday 17.05 for 4 days (return date: Monday end of day). The shop closes at 18.00 and we returned the car at 17.50 on Monday. We paid EUR77 for 4 full days of renting the car (=EUR19,25 per day). However, we only got informed that we needed to hand in the car Monday before closing time (which is 18.00). However, without any mentioning we got charged EUR46 extra (which is more than twice(!) the day price we paid for the 4 day rental!). Their response was: "It's a 24 hours policy so we need to charge you an extra day since you handed it in after 17.05". There was no room for any kind of understanding since 'This is how the system works; we can't do anything'. So in fact we paid EUR46 for 45 minutes extra. It is crazy how a company like AVIS Budget can take care of their customers in such a way. I highly discourage anyone of you to rent a car here since there is no way they can be customer friendly or think in the benefits of their customers.
Miguel was extremely friendly and helpful. He was very, very nice. Helped a lot. The car was not the Peugeot that they had told me. It was a Seat but actually I liked it a lot. I drove for like 4 hours the first day and 3 hours the second one and really enjoyed it. Nice car. Renting a car is many times a pain in the head and I came prepared for that but it was really not like that at all! I would give them 5 stars if it weren't for the fact that I found out I paid 5 times what my friend at Faro payed with a different company. I really think they need to chill with the prices. Still haven't received back the deposit for the fuel though.
