As a frequent customer at Budget Kilmainham, I can confidently say this is the best car rental experience in Dublin. Every time I rent here, I'm impressed by how efficient and friendly the service is. They make renting a car very easy, and the staff are always upfront, honest and fair. Their fleet of cars are in excellent shape--clean, well-maintained, and ready to go. I really appreciate how quick and organised they are with both pickup and drop-off. They also consistently have the best rates for car hire in Dublin. The location is very convenient, with easy access to main bus routes in and out of the city and connecting to the airport. If you're looking for a rental location that's reliable, friendly, efficient and value for money, this is the place to go.
I picked up from Budget/Avis in downtown Dublin and dropped off at the airport. My experience with the downtown location was terrible: - 75 minutes wait, though only 5 others ahead of us. Only one employee at the desk, 20 min/client. - My reservation was directly with Budget US. The price wasn't honored, with an additional 25% of admin & one-time fees. - The surreal part: a $5,800 damage deposit was added to my credit card (I kid you not!!!). We were not told about it when we got the car - found out from an alert from my Visa. The deposit was dropped 10 days later, but seriously guys - $5,800 deposit, even with a letter from Chase Visa verifying they'd cover all damages in Ireland? Budget/Avis in Ireland is franchised, but it's not a reason for not honoring reservations. UPDATE/REPLY to merchant response: 1) In its response, the merchant CONFIRMS they don't honor terms (price & deposit) of 3rd party reservations. Even reservations made with Budget directly. 2) Regarding deposit: merchant claims the 5,000 Euro deposit is in the rental agreement. The agreement I signed when I reserved at Budget.com doesn't mention such a deposit - so, merchant confirms once again not honoring reservations, even directly through Budget. They had me sign a new agreement, which perhaps mentioned the 5k Euro deposit, but it was emailed to me (no hard copy) after picking up the car.
Beware! Scam! This location is running a scam. When I booked my car from budget's website I was not informed that I need a letter from my credit card issuing bank stating my personal details and saying that my card covers car rental damage worldwide. The budget guy told me that either I buy damage insurance from them or get him the bank letter. Due to my bank being in a different time zone the customer care centres were closed and I had to pay an additional EUR80 just for the insurance. Also, the budget guy told me that if I didn't buy some imaginary insurance for front glass I had to make a deposit of EUR2000. After all of this the car that I got wasn't from the same class that I booked for. Just a few days before this booking I had another booking with Budget from Edinburgh airport and that booking went super smooth. Budget should have informed me if I needed any additional documents via email or at the time of the booking or both.
I booked a Car on "Discover Cars". I selected Full Insurance. When I got to the rental location, they told me that my Full Coverage was with a Broker and the Broker pays the renter (not the rental company) so I still had to have a 2000 Euro hold on my credit card. I was surprised by that but it's not the rental companies fault it's really Discover Cars for not being transparent. The check in to pickup the car was smooth and the return was also smooth. I think the people working there are professional and the overall price was good. I have had other rental companies that scam you by always finding something they blame the renter for. These guys were not like that.
We showed up shortly after opening on a weekday and had very quick service (no lineup ahead of us). Our vehicle was ready to go when we arrived and was clean and in good condition. However, we were not impressed with the staff we dealt with. He was rude and impatient.
This is the worst car hire experience we have ever had, they are only getting one Star as you can't post a review with Zero. Avoid this place if at all possible they are horrible to deal with and their cars are terrible, old, high kms, filthy inside and out, smelly, unsafe and basic I'd go as far to say they are running some sort of scam from this branch, once they found out we had a tight itinerary to get somewhere, the manager stepped in and told the rep we were dealing with to change the vehicle he had had loaded in the system and was about to give us. They then palmed us off with a car that did not meet the specification of what we had pre-booked. This fact was confirmed on drop off at the airport where the supervisor there confirmed we had been downgraded by a couple of steps. At the pick up we went out to inspect the car once issued the key and found it to be filthy and smelly and a more basic model than was in our booking. We were so shocked we returned to the representative and were then lied to, telling us "this was the spec of car we had booked", "in Ireland cars are older and more basic than the rest of the world", "this is a safe & good car", "we could pay for an upgrade to the vehicle we expected (a Toyota Corolla) but would need to make our own way to the airport and pay a premium for an upgrade", "they had no vehicles at the branch for an upgrade" We would have upgraded as the car was that bad but they "had none at the branch" and we didn't have time to waste to go to the airport so we unfortunately took the car. We immediately regretted this and had a terrible driving experience as the car was so uncomfortable, radio barely worked and didn't feel safe. Car had a NCAP rating of 2 and we noticed mid journey the passenger airbag had been turned off. Resulting in us stopping our journey and searching to find how to switch it back on as we didn't feel safe. All in all the worst experience we have ever had with car hire anywhere in the world and terrible people to deal with. It ruined our short stay in Ireland and caused back ache through uncomfortable driving position Avoid this business if possible and if you deal with them do not engage with them on your plans as they will be looking for opportunities to rip you off. The manager of the branch was of no help and wouldn't engage with us at all and we believe he was the instigator of the entire scam.
I can't recommend this rental location on pickup the stuff member was extremely aggressive and argumentative about policy's that was not included on the rental agreement issued by a 3rd party agency it was quite an embarrassment if I'm honest they did eventually concede on the aggressive policies when I presented the lease agreement provided by the 3rd party but shouldn't have ever been an issue in the first place On top of that the booking was for a hybrid vehicle but I got a standard petrol car I understand car rental location say or similar so you get what you're giving basically The last complaint the vehicle didn't come with a full tank of fuel despite saying it did I just couldn't have been bothered going back into the agent as he wasn't a pleasant person to deal with and I just wanted to be on my way The experience on pickup was dreadful so that just ruined everything form the start At this location they provide a poor choice of vehicles Don't get ripped off go elsewhere and make sure you add excess insurance with the booking it's a lot cheaper then at the desk
Great service! Easy pick up and drop off experience (we picked up at this location and dropped off at the airport, where shuttle to terminal was as well provided) When renting car in Ireland Make sure you have letter from Insuranse if you are from Canada and want to save on collision damage waver. If you using credit car insurance you can call your bank and they will email that letter to you. Wish there was a sign for rental car that indicates that person is a tourist driver. Like L for learners and N for new drivers. I think that'd help other drivers to be more cautious of drivers that typically don't drive on the left and need time to adjust. Don't forget, drive on the left!
