We rented a small car from Payless upon arriving in San Juan. They gave me a Nissan kick. It was great. They got us in and out quickly, and I found the rate to be very reasonable.
This is my 3rd time renting a car from Payless in the last 12 months. I must say that its service and customer care have improved 100% during said timeframe. They have a fleet of new cars available for rent at excellent rates. This last rental experience was great, with no hidden or surprise additional costs added at pickup time. Jorge, the customer service representative that assisted me at pickup was kind, knowledgeable and eager to serve well. Kudos to him !! Payless is now my #1 Puerto Rico car rental choice!
I had an amazing experience with this car rental company. I travel to puerto rico frequently. The price is higher than when you reserve the vehicle online but if you call them beforehand they'll provide accurate information. The vehicle was brand new. I only reduced a point because I left my hat and could not get a hold of someone to assist me.

I have many concerns about this company. The most glaring is the price that is quoted online will not be final price at pick up. It will be double or triple the price that is initially quoted online. They hit you with all kinds of fees, many that you don't need. Like a fee for tolls that you will not encounter unless you leave the city of San Juan to go to another part of the island. Most will not do that. However, customer service reps intentionally fail to mention this in order to increase sales. They also fail to mention that you will be hit with a gas surcharge if you fail to return the car with a full tank, regardless of how much gas was in the vehicle at time of pick up. The customer service here leaves much to be desired. The reps weren't welcoming and gave off negative energy as though they were providing a service out of resentful obligation instead of a genuine willingness to be helpful. There seems to be a broad range of vehicles offered. Most are SUVs. Highly recommend some type of coverage on the vehicle as the roads in SJ are awful, and people drive super aggressive here. My rental ran smoothly. On small issues was an under inflated front driver side tire that I didn't catch at the time of pick up. Other than that, the experience was decent
While the shuttle and shuttle driver were awesome, the service was terrible. There are endless EXTRA charges and fees! Even an early return fee that was never discussed with me, even after I asked!!! Take copy of your insurance or they try to take a huge deposit and push their insurance on you. The actual car was fine, service sucked.
Get customer service, great vehicle and quick great customer service. Quick to get car and shuttle bus available immediately. Vehicle are in great condition. Great price on rental. You can't get a better deal. Highly recommend.
Have to exchange the car 3 times. The first was with mechanical problems, the second was filthy and smelling awful, and the third one was not perfect, but we were not going to keep changing cars. At the end from paying $60 ended up paying $218. Two things they don't tell you about are the amount of extra charges and the hold in your credit card equal to your insurance deductible. Awful experience. I definitely not recommended it.
