Don't They're not nice. The car was mediocre. It's good outside of Spain, but kinda terrible there
Apart from being located in a car park and not easy to find we had excellent service. We really appreciate being spoken to in English. The Citroen C4 we were given was clean and roomy and had a pretty good satnav that only took us to the right address in the wrong town once! Did 2000+ km and found the car very comfortable.
Very disappointing experience with Avis - Unannounced cancellation, extra costs, and poor service. I booked a car through the Avis website to pick up on July 28th at the Barcelona Sants location. I completed the pre-check process, providing all the required information (driver's license, credit card, etc.), and two days before the pick-up date, I received an email confirming that everything was ready for my reservation. However, when I arrived on the day of pick-up, I was told that my reservation had been canceled, even though I had not requested any cancellation. What was even more frustrating was that I received no prior notification by email or any other means informing me of this cancellation. This situation caused a significant inconvenience as I had a crucial trip planned to France on the same day. I was forced to rent a car last-minute at the same Avis location, which cost me approximately 400 euros more than my original booking. Additionally, I asked if I would need anything special to drive on the highways in the countries I planned to visit (including Austria). I was told that I wouldn't need anything, but when I arrived in Austria, I found out I had to purchase a sticker to legally drive on the highways there. This incorrect information further added to the hassle. While the car was generally fine, it was missing both coolant and windshield washer fluid, which I had to purchase and fill myself. The lack of communication, misinformation, and additional expenses made this an incredibly frustrating experience. Not only did I face unexpected financial costs, but I also had to deal with unnecessary stress during my trip. I expected much better service and reliability from a company like Avis. Conclusion: I cannot recommend this service due to the unreliability, lack of proper communication, and additional costs and maintenance that I had to handle on my own.
First vehicle had preexisting body damaged and we were told via email to turn it in immediately for repairs after driving it for several days. Second vehicle (smaller than we had reserved and paid for and with 90k miles on the OD) had a faulty transmission and stranded us roadside in a very rural area 3 days later. The car was eventually towed but we had to wait 3 hours in the afternoon heat with all our luggage on the side of the road for a cab to arrive. When we arrived at the airport hours out of way to pick up a replacement vehicle, staff were short-tempered and rude despite none of the events being our fault. This experience wasted two full days of our vacation to Spain.
I've had bad experiences with rental car companies in the past so for our European road trip we booked through Costco because as long term Costco members we know they go out of their way to help. In this circumstance I have been sorely let down, though I expect Costco will rectify the issues when we get home next week. First, the agent in Barcelona was polite but our problems started here. I was quoted $1500CAD when I booked the Avis vehicle through Costco Travel. We had planned to leave Barcelona on May 13, and had plans in southern Spain booked, so did not have the ability to refuse the car and make other plans. We were charged EUR1500, which is $900CAD more than quoted. We were also lied to by the Avis agent in Barcelona about coverage- Costco members are supposed to enjoy insurance coverage, and he told us we had none. When we were preparing to leave with our ford focus, the agent said "I'm giving you a Kia" (I missed the model he said, and gave us some keys from an envelope. Turns out we were given a Citron C3, which was fine). Upon getting to the vehicle we noticed it was fairly messy and had some damage. I snapped a couple pictures, as the agent did not do a walk around inspection with us. $1500 CAD was expensive enough, approx $550 for rental $175 tax and the rest for "one way destination" charge, nevermind being in Euros. Upon returning the vehicle at the airport in Lisbon, what I suspect is a contractor walked around the vehicle and pointed out some white mark on the edge of the front fairing and told us we'd be charged EUR312 for "damages" we caused. I hadn't seen this mark when I took a few pics in Barcelona because it was basically unnoticeable. I told her I did not make that mark, and proceeded to rub off what I suspect was some sort of chalk. She said "you scratched it" and I said I did not. She showed me some screen with what I suspect was the previous renters email address and asked if that was me, and I said "sure", so I suspect the charges wouldn't have been put on my credit card anyways, but I wasn't about to let this absolute jerk get away with accusing me of this. There was an Avis agent in the booth, so we walked into the office and explained what had happened. He came and looked and agreed to not charge us, but brought up our contract showing us having a Ford Focus, and then when he did a search showing us having a Kia. I suspect the laziness of the Barcelona agent to fill everything out correctly would have got us out of the extra charges anyways, but in typical fashion I feel screwed by a car rental company. When we return home to Canada next week I plan on filing a complaint and expect to be reimbursed $900CAD on the rental plus all extra insurance fees I was forced into taking. If Costco won't help, I plan of filing for a chargeback through MasherCard. I rented through Costco because car rental companies are crooked, and this experience confirms my opinion further, if I could giv negative star ratings I would. Your company is trash.
Terrible experience ! They don't care about their customers. Had bad experience on several occasions. But this time the car broke down and I had to interrupt my travel to go to an airport and get a new car. Car with 20.000 km and "gear box failure - take to repair" ! On returning the exchange car I was charged instead of getting some kind o apologies or compensation !! Stay away from budget and Avis. Checkout all the other rental companies located at Barcelona Sans station nearby. Also much better located.
Very disorganized, long queue with a mix of people with prepaid contracts and simple reservations. There are two desks, one downstairs to sign the contract and one upstairs to pick up the keys. Expect to queue for both of them. Staff not pleasant and trying to upsell their services. I had CDW and was told the car was not insured. Be careful what you agree with. Edit: return was a total different experience, friendly staff and fast turnaround. Upgrading to 3 star overall. Edit 2: another rental, another 30 min wait to return the car. Unacceptable.
