The minimum age for car rental in Spain is typically 21 years, with some companies requiring 23 or 25 years. Young driver surcharges (around €20-30 per day) usually apply for drivers under 25. Some luxury or high-performance vehicles may have higher age requirements of 25 or 30 years.
You'll need a valid driver's license held for at least 1 year, a passport or EU ID card, and a credit card in the main driver's name. Non-EU licenses require an International Driving Permit (IDP). The credit card must have sufficient funds for the security deposit (typically €500-1000).
Third-party liability insurance and basic CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) with theft protection are mandatory and usually included in the rental price. However, these often come with a high excess (deductible). We recommend considering additional coverage like Super CDW to reduce or eliminate the excess, and glass, tire, and underbody protection.
Most rental companies allow travel to EU countries, particularly to neighboring Portugal and France. However, you must inform the rental company in advance and may need additional cross-border insurance. Travel to non-EU countries or Morocco is typically not permitted.
The 'Full-to-Full' policy is usually the most economical option, where you receive the car with a full tank and return it full. Avoid 'Full-to-Empty' policies as they often charge premium rates for the initial fuel. Some companies offer a 'Fair Fuel' policy with a small service charge for refueling.
Spanish rental fleets offer a wide range of vehicles: economy cars (like Seat Ibiza, Fiat 500), compact cars (VW Golf, Ford Focus), family cars (Opel Astra, Peugeot 308), SUVs (Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson), premium vehicles (Mercedes C-Class, BMW 3 Series), and vans (Mercedes Vito, VW Transporter). Automatic transmission is available but should be reserved in advance as manual is more common.
Many Spanish city centers have Limited Traffic Zones (ZTL) or Low Emission Zones (LEZ), particularly in Madrid (Madrid Central) and Barcelona (ZBE). Ensure your rental car has the appropriate environmental sticker and check access restrictions. Some historic centers are pedestrian-only or require special permits.
Thoroughly inspect the car and document (photos/video) any existing damage, check tire condition and spare tire, verify fuel level, test all lights and wipers, ensure mandatory safety equipment is present (warning triangle, reflective vest), and familiarize yourself with the vehicle controls. Get an emergency contact number from the rental company.
